As clinicians increasingly seek to master ultrasound-guided peripheral catheter insertions, there is a pressing need for effective training practices that ensure quality and accountability. This approach emphasizes teaching the three stages of needle skills through a mastery learning process, incorporating ultrasound education, simulation, and competency validation. A blended training method combines online learning with hands-on practice, focusing on the "3 Stations of the Needle." Pre- and post-test evaluations demonstrate improved understanding and performance. By systematically integrating these techniques, clinicians can achieve proficiency and success rates of 80% or higher, ultimately enhancing patient safety and reducing insertion attempts.
Learning Objectives:
Describe Mastery Learning with a systematic training process incorporating needling skills and performance standards to promote high-level success with UGPIV insertions.
Identify the 3 key visual signs that indicate 3 Stations needle position on the ultrasound screen.
Explain the significance of the three stations of the needle.
Contrast and describe common training processes with training that includes minimum performance scoring with needling skills.
