Some patients don’t fit within our standard practices and fall into a relentless cycle of suffering: multiple IV attempts, anxiety, skin disruption, infections, catheter dislodgement, venous depletion, and more. This isn’t just occasional—it happens repeatedly. While we can leave work behind, these patients continue to struggle with issues we left unresolved. It’s crucial to recognize their unique needs and apply specialized techniques and technology to reduce suffering for our chronically ill patients. We will go over a couple case studies with videos of a patient with multiple comorbidities and the complications due to standard vascular access practice technique and technologies. Her complications are common amongst the chronic illness community and we will be comprehensively reviewing solutions to those complicated situations and the results after practice and technology changes. This presentation will emphasize the importance of staying up to date with not only techniques, but also technology to provide our patients with more options to live with their life-long, life-saving catheters.
Learning Objectives:
Clinicians will be aware of the commonly rare complications of vascular access care and maintenance for chronic illness patients
Clinicians will witness for themselves, complications of standard technology and practices.
Clinicians will be knowledgeable of alternative solutions for their patients.
