In 2015, HMS (Michigan Hospital Medicine Safety Consortium) published guidelines for appropriate PICC use, leading to a quality improvement program that increased appropriate usage from 31.9% to 49.0% and reduced complications from 14.7% to 10.7% across 52 Michigan hospitals. Despite these successes, challenges remain in optimizing PICC use for cancer patients, who face greater risks from vascular access devices. HMS addressed this gap by developing MAGIC*Oncology, using the RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method, with a panel of international experts that convened in October 2024 to provide recommendations on appropriate vascular access device practice for patients with cancer. This session will present the findings and panel recommendations, which will cover device selection, infection prevention, thrombosis prevention, and insertion/removal and maintenance practices.
